Interior vs. Exterior Paint: What's the Difference?

Published by Derek Shandonay • Mountain Man Painting

While interior and exterior paints may look similar in the can, they are formulated with completely different chemical resins and performance characteristics.

Interior paint resins are designed to resist scrubbing, stains, and household scuffs while emitting minimal Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) for healthy indoor air quality.

Exterior paint resins are formulated with flexible polymers that expand and contract with temperature changes and contain UV blockers and fungicides to prevent mildew and fading.

Never use interior paint on outdoor surfaces, as it will break down quickly when exposed to sunlight and moisture.
